The Whitaker Home, 1885
The Whitaker home was more than a place to sleep. It was the center of a busy farm where the family worked, played, ate, argued, laughed, and cared for one another. From the windows, the children could watch the changing countryside around them—fields, animals, weather, and the daily work that kept the family going.
For the Whitaker children, home was the place everything began and everything eventually returned to.

Follow the path the Whitaker children traveled to school in 1885. From their home in Peckles-Wood Shire, the journey stretched nearly six miles across rugged countryside and over the Cumberland border to the schoolmaster’s house.
Six miles is a long way to walk to school! For a nine-year-old, the journey could take several hours—and the Whitaker children had hills, streams, rough paths, and all sorts of surprises along the way.
