Slippery Stones and Icy Water
The water flows straight down from the snowy mountain peaks. It is freezing cold, even on sunny days. To cross without soaking their leather boots, the kids have to hop across a line of wet, mossy stepping stones. One slip means falling into the numbing water!
On mornings when the river is too high and floods the rocks, they have to work as a team. They hold hands tightly to make a strong human chain. Then, they step carefully through the deep, rocky water together—or turn back for home.
