Milestone 5: The Protective Stone Wall
The Edge of the County
You made it to the edge of the county! This giant, mossy stone wall marks the border of Cumberland. It was built long ago to protect the sheep fields from the fierce mountain winds.
For miles and miles, these endless grey stones wind across the empty, rolling hills of Northern England. They were piled up by hand, block by heavy block, by generations of local farmers who needed to keep their sheep safe from the harsh weather.
But on this freezing November day in 1885, the ancient wall serves a completely different purpose. It becomes a vital shield for six brave children on their long walk to school.
A Shield Against the Gales
As the Whitaker children leave the shelter of Peckles-Wood Shire behind, the land opens up around them. With no trees to block the weather, the bitter November wind sweeps across the open ridges, stinging their faces and whipping their heavy winter cloaks into the air.
To make it through the final stretch of their journey, the children use the wall as a giant windbreak.
Huddling close together against the thick, icy stones, they finally find a moment of calm. Sheltered from the roaring wind, they take a deep breath, blow on their cold hands, and tighten the ribbons on their winter bonnets and flat caps. Standing in the quiet shadow of the old boundary wall, they look back at the miles they have already traveled and prepare for the final push toward the village.
