The Mill Burn is not a quiet little stream.It comes rushing down from the hills, tumbling over stones and slipping beneath the rough crossing. The Whitaker children can hear it long before they reach it.
But there is something else to notice. Some of the stones along the water’s edge are stained a strange yellow-orange. The children know what it is. Yellow boy.
The Mill Burn runs through country where men have been digging into the hills for generations. The mines need water, and water has a way of finding its own path. Where the mine water reaches the burn, it can leave the yellow stain behind.
The younger children are fascinated by it. They wonder where the water has been before it reaches the stream. The older ones have heard stories about the workings in the hills. There are places where the ground looks different, old stones have been moved, and the land still carries signs of the men who worked beneath it.
But the Mill Burn keeps moving.
Water rushes over the stones. Leaves spin in the current. And somewhere beneath the sound, the children are certain there is something else.
Perhaps it is only the water. Perhaps.
Nobody stays long enough to find out. There is still a road to travel, a chapel to reach, and plenty of work waiting when they return home.
Look Closely
The next time you see a stream, look at the stones along its edge. What colors do you see? The Mill Burn has a story written right on its rocks.
