Jerry Quarterhouse’s last memory of his grandfather was the day his mother took him away. Months later, at just five years old, Jerry found himself in an orphanage, lost and alone. He didn’t know what had happened to his parents, and he never saw them again. Each time a family came looking to adopt, they chose someone else. The staff whispered about him, calling him a “child at risk.”
Now, nearly twenty years later, Jerry is building a life in Memphis. He works for a newspaper and is engaged to Cali, whose wealthy family has big plans for their future. Her father has even offered Jerry a promising job at his company—a move Cali supports to secure a better life for them both.
But fate, or perhaps something more, intervenes. Jerry stumbles upon his grandfather’s old home, abandoned and slated for demolition just across the Mississippi state line. Determined to uncover the truth about his past, Jerry visits the house with Cali the day before it’s set to be bulldozed.
Will the secrets of the house help Jerry piece together the mystery of his childhood? Can he finally overcome the label of being a “child at risk” and find the closure he’s been seeking?
