The lane narrows here. Stone walls press in on both sides, and the path bends between them before climbing toward the higher ground. The Whitaker children have walked this way many times. But this part of the path has a history of its own.
Father tells them that cattle once came this way on their journey to market. Not one or two. Herds.
The drovers walked behind them, keeping the animals moving along the old lanes toward Hexham. Some journeys took many miles, and the men and cattle had to face the same hills, mud, rain, and cold that the Whitakers know so well.
The children look at the lane differently after that. It doesn’t seem quite so empty anymore. They imagine the sound of hooves on the stones. The calls of the drovers. The slow movement of cattle filling the narrow way.
Then they look at the walls. They are old walls. Some stones are worn smooth. Others have fallen and been put back. The walls keep the fields where they belong, just as they have for years.
“Stay to the path,” Father says.
The children do.
There is no need to make the cattle angry. Or Father.
Look Closely
Look at the lane. Could you imagine a whole herd of cattle coming through here? The next time you walk an old country path, remember that it may have carried people, animals, and stories long before you arrived.
Some roads have more history beneath your feet than you might think.
