A hagstone is a stone with a hole worn naturally through it. In Northumberland and other parts of Britain, such stones were believed to have protective powers. Some were hung in barns and stables to guard animals from harm and keep away bad luck.
The Whitakers believed in the magic of hagstones. In Broken Sanctuary, the children share their excitement over the stone and what it might be able to do.
Molly’s has been hanging on her stall for years. Who first put it there? Perhaps it was hung for luck. Perhaps there is more to the old stone than anyone knows.
Some old things are worth keeping.
