“I am not wild. I am not worldly-wise. I am simply Catapracht.”
Catapracht is a Pureling Drake from the Beginning, a time when his kind walked with man as companions. When humanity left the Sanctuary, they struggled, and Purelings™ that left with them became ordinary animals and some became foes.
Catapracht and many of his kind were shielded inside the Sanctuary. But in 1885, the Water Veil shattered. Thrust into the outside world, Catapracht and the other Purelings™ now breathe contaminated air, eat soiled foods, and walk an earth where predators are everywhere. Some seek to steal his very soul. He is a babe in a grown-up body, entirely unprepared for the world, yet forced to traverse it to reach the New Beginning.
Currently, Catapracht is just a Drake. He speaks freely with people and other beings alike, communicating with the children of the Whitaker farm naturally and finding their human logic deeply fascinating. He speaks because he is pure. He possesses no fire, for in the Beginning, fire and destruction had no purpose. He is gentle, curious, and entirely free of fear, doubt, and worldly trouble.
The greatest danger to Catapracht and the other Purelings is the threat of becoming worldly-wise. If he gives in to the pursuits of the ordinary animals around him, an irreversible corruption will take root. It is only when he becomes worldly-wise that the fables of human history come true, transforming his very nature:
- He Becomes a Fire Drake: The destructive flame he never needed will finally come.
- The Loss of Speech: The rare grace of the first tongue will vanish. He will stop talking to people entirely, cut off from human communication forever.
- The Fallen Sovereign: He will cease to be a pure Drake, transforming into the silent, wild monster of human myth—trapped in the mortal world and barred from the New Beginning.
