Who could find the first four-leaf clover? That was the question that often sent Stacy and James racing across the meadow.
The twins dropped to their knees and began searching through the thick patches of clover. Stacy looked at one plant at a time. James searched much faster. He was sure luck would find him before patience did.
“I found one!” James shouted.
Stacy hurried over.
It had only three leaves.
James laughed.
“I forgot to count!”
The search began again.
The meadow was covered with clover. It was soft to crawl through, smelled sweet in the sunshine, and before long the Purelings will be wanting it for dinner.
Children in Northumberland loved hunting for four-leaf clovers. Almost every clover has three leaves, so finding one with four felt like discovering a tiny treasure. Many people believed a four-leaf clover brought good luck. Whether that was true or not, no one really knew.
The twins searched beside old fence posts, around mossy stones, and anywhere the clover grew thick. Every time James shouted, Stacy would smile and ask, “Did you count this time?”
Then everything became quiet.
“I found one,” Stacy whispered.
James hurried over, expecting another joke.
It wasn’t.
Hidden among hundreds of ordinary clovers was one with four perfect leaves.
For a moment, neither of them said a word.
Then James grinned.
“You win.”
Stacy carefully picked the tiny clover and slipped it between the pages of her notebook. She wanted to press it flat and keep it as a memory of the day.
By the time the sun slipped behind the hills, the twins had found only one four-leaf clover.
But they had spent the whole afternoon laughing together.
Sometimes, that was the greatest prize of all.
