The Whitaker’s Chapel, 1885
Every Sunday morning, the family woke up early. They had to care for the farm before going to chapel. They milked the cows and fed the chickens. They carried fresh water to all the animals. The cows, sheep, chickens, pigs, and mule needed help. Farm animals depended on people every day, even on Sundays.
After breakfast, everyone put on their best clothes for church. There were no cars or buses in 1885. Families walked everywhere. The walk to chapel was quiet and peaceful. It gave everyone time to talk and enjoy the fresh air. The younger children skipped ahead on the path. The older children kept watch over them. The parents walked behind them and talked quietly. Along the way, they passed stone walls and green fields. Sometimes they met neighbors on the road and smiled at them.
Chapel was a special place. The family did more than just sing songs. They prayed together and listened to lessons from the Bible. They helped each other feel happy and thanked God for a good week.
After they went home, everyone ate a big Sunday dinner. In the afternoon, the children sat at the long wooden table. They worked on their school lessons. The older kids helped the younger kids practice reading. They wrote letters on small stone slates. It was a quiet time. The parents smiled as they watched the children study together.
Before supper, the family took one last walk around the farm. They fed the animals and locked them up safely for the night. After the chores were done, everyone sat around the table again. They felt thankful for a happy day of worship, family, and simple joys. When the sun went down, the farmhouse grew quiet. Soon everyone was asleep, ready for a new week on the farm.
